Project IMPACT and the Cobb Institute presented The William McBride, M.D Forum at the NMA Annual Convention entitled “The Challenge! Changing the Face of Clinical Research.”

African Americans and other minorities have historically been under-represented in clinical research—both as participants and researchers. This symposium provided the opportunity to learn more about the importance of clinical research among minorities, how to get involved, and how to increase participation. Prominent speakers representing the National Medical Association, The Cobb Institute, National Institutes of Health, Stanford University Center for Biomedical Ethics, St. Petersburg Heart Center, Charles R. Drew University of Medicine & Science, Duke Clinical Research Institute, Food & Drug Administration, and other major institutions discussed the following topics:

1. Should African Americans Participate in Clinical Research?
2. Non-Industry Opportunities to Conduct Clinical Research
3. The Clinical Trial Mystique!
4. Best Practices & Promising Approaches: Increasing African American Consumer Participation in Clinical Research
5. Now that We Know—What Should NMA Do? Solutions, Resolutions & Next Steps
