Director’s Corner

Welcome to the W. Montague Cobb/NMA Health Institute Website!

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to our new website!
The W. Montague Cobb/NMA Health Institute was founded in December 2004 at Howard University in Washington, D.C. This long awaited organization is a product of the collaborative efforts of the leadership of the National Medical Association, the family of Dr. Cobb represented by his daughters Mrs. Amelia Cobb Gray, Mrs. Carolyn Cobb Wilkinson, and AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals.

During his life, Dr. Cobb served as a catalyst for social action that supported fairness and equity in the delivery of healthcare services for all Americans regardless of their station in life. He was the first to envision the creation of a health institute that would inform and influence health policy both on a national and on a local level.

I share with the Board of Directors of the Cobb Institute and officers of the National Medical Association the dream that the Cobb Institute will grow and mature to become a recognized asset of the National Medical Association and a voice in the world of health disparities research. To assure success, the Cobb Institute has assembled an outstanding group of scholars including public health and clinical research investigators who are dedicated to the task of eliminating health disparities.

Since its inception, the Cobb/NMA Institute has focused on its mission to identify and facilitate solutions that will reduce racial and ethnic health disparities and in the process, improve the health of all Americans.  We are building the infrastructure to conduct cutting edge research examining the on-going ramifications of race, ethnicity, gender, and poverty in access to health care and health outcomes.

The Cobb Institute recently received approval from the NMA Board of Trustees to obtain 501 (C) (3) status as an independent research organization. The growth of the Institute has been steady and the agenda is growing.

We look to engage all of you in meaningful ways as we move forward.
